KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, July 26: After being impacted by full moon, abnormal tide in the Meghna River in coastal Kamalnagar Upazila of the district is continuing to inundate low areas.

According to local sources, the tidal water has been entering localities for the last four days, marooning thousands of people twice in a day.

Now about 20,000 people get water confined for eight hours for two times in a day; they are passing days in inhuman condition; and they are passing days in serious food crisis; their ovens have been submerged, halting their cooking.

The tide water current washed away muddy living houses while several hundreds of ponds and enclosures were floated away.
Irrecoverable submergences were reported in thousands of hectares of vegetable farms, Aush paddy fields and Aman seedbeds.

The impact of the full moon started since Monday noon, pushing up the water level in the Meghna River by four/five feet than the normal level.

The tide is deluging low-lying areas in the upazila including  Motirhaat, Charsamsuddin, Pachwim Martin, Nasirganj, Kadirpanditerhat, Pachwim Char Lorence, Charjagabandhu, Matabbarhat, Ludhua Folcon, and Patarirhat.

Locals said, due to disappearance of embankment belonging to Water Development Board (WDB), the river banking areas are lying unprotected; an under-construction embankment of about Tk 310 crore project was not completed timely; that is why the tide water is submerging the low areas.

If the dam would be rapidly completed, the coastal dwellers would get protection from the flooding, they added.

A dweller of Patarirhat area Abul Kashem said, the abnormal tide has inundated almost all homes in their area; as their house floors are under water, they are staying on cots or scaffolding.

Submerged Aman seedbeds are set to get damaged, he added.

A housewife of Charfalcon area Fatema Begum said, their ovens have been submerged, turning these unfit for cooking.
Water is entering into houses for two times in a day, swelling the water level up to knee-level in the room, she added.
She further said, "Our suffering knows no bound."

Charfalcon Union Chairman Mosharref Hossain Bagha said, amid the four-day tidal situation, people have been passing days in uttered hardship; and they are living in inhuman condition due to damages of their living houses.

He was echoed by Charkalkini Union Chairman Master Chhayef Ullah, Saheberhat Union Chairman Md Abul Khair, and Patarirhat Union Chairman Advocate AKM Nurul Amin Raju.

These public representatives said, both muddy and metallic roads were damaged, disrupting local communications.

WDB Executive Engineer Nahiduzzaman Khan said, in the rainy season, the Meghna water level exceeds the normal level during full moon and off moon, and then low areas along the Meghna banks get inundated.

Now Meghna bank protection project is going on, and under this project, Meghna embankment will be constructed, he added.
Then the tide time submergence of low areas will be no longer, the WDB official maintained.
