The six-member committee, formed by the Home Ministry, has visited the Narsingdi district jail on Sunday to probe the prison break incident.

The Home Ministry's Security Services Division formed the committee, headed by Joint Secretary Faruk Ahmed, on July 22.

The delegation inspected the site around 11am on Sunday to commence their investigation.

During the visit, head of the investigation committee Faruk Ahmed, said,"The ground work related to the investigation has been done already and the video footages collected from different sources, are being analysed."

To complete this task, cooperation from eyewitnesses and local residents is necessary, he emphasized adding,"We have spoken with those responsible for security at the jail on the day of the incident. We will speak with more people if needed."

Though the probe-body was asked to submit their report within 10 working days but the submission time may be extended, if needed, he said adding "We hope we can complete the investigation during the stipulated time."

Narsingdi Additional District Magistrate Tazwar Akram Sakapi Ibne Sazzad, Additional superintendent of Narsingdi police KM Shahidul Islam Shohagh and Jail Super Shamim Iqbal were present there.

Earlier on the afternoon of July 19, thousands of people attacked and set fire to Narsingdi District Jail during the student quota reform movement. They broke into cells, resulting in the escape of 826 prisoners, including nine ‘militants’. The attackers also looted weapons, ammunition, food supplies, and caused extensive damage and arson.

Initially, the prison authorities and guards attempted to resist but were forced to retreat due to the overwhelming situation.

So far, 11 cases have been filed concerning the attacks, vandalism, and arson at various locations, including the jail.

Narsingdi Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman on Friday reported that they arrested nine escaped prisoners, including four militants.

Additionally, 481 escapees have surrendered to the police or the court, he said.
