At least 36 students were detained at different areas in the capital on Monday when they tried to stage demonstration in protest against detention of six coordinators of Anti-discriminatory Student Movement.

Coordinators outside police custody earlier on Sunday announced countrywide demonstration rallies for Monday.

They claimed coordinators who were in custody of the Detective Branch of police, on Sunday announced withdrawal of their protest programmes from the DB office on 'gunpoint'.

Rejecting the statement of the six coordinators, they declared protest rallies across the country.
Coordinators said they would continue the movement until their nine-point demands was met.

At least 10 students were detained from Mirpur 10 and other 10 from in front of Star Kabab Restaurant at Dhanmondi when they gathered to hold a rally in protest against detention of six coordinators of Anti-discriminatory Student Movement.

As per pre-scheduled programme, protesters held rallies at eight areas in the capital including Science Laboratory, Gate No 8 of North South University (NSU), National Press Club,
BNS Centre at Uttara, Mirpur 10, Mirpur ECB Chattar, Rampura and Mohakhali.

Chased from in front of the National Press Club, protesters gathered at Purana Paltan but could not take position at noon.

Police arrested four students including two students of Dhaka University at Purana Paltan.

Detained DU students are Musaddique Ali Ibne Mohammad of Bangla Department and Abid Hasan Rafi of Arabic Department.

NSU students claimed that police detained at least 10 to 12 protesters from in front of the university at around 1:00pm.

However, they could not identify if all of them were NSU students.

Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged demonstration on the campus in the afternoon.

Speakers at a rally, held at the base of JU Shaheed Minar, alleged DB of forcing six coordinators to withdraw the ongoing student movement.

Rejecting the 'scripted' announcement, JU teachers and students said they would continue the movement to meet their nine-point demands.

Besides, they demanded immediate release of JU coordinator of the Anti-discriminatory Student Movement, Arif Sohel.

Coordinators demanded that Prime Minister must take responsibility for deaths of students.

Their other demands include resignation of Home Minister and Road Transport and Bridges Minister from the cabinet and AL, and termination of the deputy inspectors general of police, the police commissioner and superintendents of police of the areas where students were killed.

Meanwhile, at least 15 students were injured in an attack on quota reform protesters allegedly by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Barishal University (BU) campus in the afternoon.

Nine of the injured were admitted to Barishal's Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Eyewitnesses and protesters said some students involved in BCL politics carried out the attack.

Sujay Suvo, an organiser of the protest, said the attack took place when they gathered in front of the administration building to protest false news reports.

He said a press conference was held on Saturday in support of the quota reform protesters. However, local newspapers reported the opposite.

"At that time, a group of 40 to 50 people led by AK Arafat, associated with Chhatra League, suddenly attacked us with sticks, causing severe injuries to many," he added.

The attackers beat at least 15 of us, he added.

Hundreds of Rajshahi University (RU) students blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in the afternoon in protest against detention of the six coordinators of the quota reform movement.

The students marched from the university's Binodpur gate and gathered in front of the main entrance of RU, blocking the highway from 12:20pm to 1:00pm.

Police dispersed protesters from Chattogram's Cheragi Pahar Moor by firing tear shells and sound grenades in the afternoon.

Students could not stage demonstration in Mymensing as police and ruling party activists preoccupied their venues, protesters alleged.

Students of Comilla University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology reportedly held demonstration, among others.
