Lawyer and human rights activist Barrister Sara Hossain has said an individual cannot be picked up for providing him safety.
"If an individual is arrested, it must be stated clearly who is arresting him, why he is arrested for, and where he is being taken to. Here, those who have arrested, they (DB) say that they have kept them (detainees) in their safe custody. No law allows to pick up an individual in such a manner," she said during the hearing on a writ filed seeking directives to release six coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement and to not open fire on the students.
The hearing was held at the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon on Monday.
Addressing the High Court bench, Barrister Sara Hossain said, "We want to see that they (coordinators) have been placed before you or released from custody. They (DB) claim that the coordinators have been kept for their own safety. Who has given them this authority? An individual is picked up against his will and kept in other's custody. Where is it written?"
Taking part in the hearing, Barrister Anik Huque said police can take steps to protect themselves if they come under attack. "We have pleaded to you seeking directive not to fire live bullets on students which can take life. We don't want that the country's resources are destroyed."
"Are not these students resources of this country? Minimum force may be applied to control them. If we talk about Metro Rail, Elevated Expressway, these are our properties. But, the lives which had been lost are not our properties? Please stop the killings. They are our children."
Later, the High Court bench set Wednesday for the next hearing and pass order.
Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Manzur Al-Matin and Ainunnahar Siddiqa filed the writ petition.
