RAJSHAHI, July 30: Fish breeding has become under threat due to damaging breeding grounds by China Duari, Nylon and Current nets in the Padma River of the district.

According local sources, unplanned and reckless fishing by these banned nets are taking place in the river unabated.

A visit to Mizaner Morr area at Ward No. 9 of Horian Union in Poba Upazila found several fishers carrying out fishing by China Duari nets.

Fisher Muktar Ali said, all fishes get trapped in the China Duari Net; this net is set up in low water, then snakes are trapped; the net is set up in deep bed of the river in the afternoon, and it is lifted in the next morning; and each net traps one and half kilogram to two kg fishes of different species. He is setting up five such nets in the river daily.

He said, this net is not available in Rajshahi. It is purchased from Kushtia at Tk 3,500 to 4,000 per piece.

Over 200 fishermen catch fishes by the net from Mizaner crossing to Charghat.

On condition of anonymity, some fishermen said, despite restriction, many fishers are carrying out fishing by that net; during campaign time, their fishing remains suspended for two/three days.

Authorities concerned should take effective steps to China Duari, Nylon, and Current nets, they added.

Poba Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Asaduzzaman said, China Duari net is illegal and banned net; in addition to fingerlings, snake, frog and crab are trapped in that net.

"It is not possible for us to conduct regular campaign in the river because of manpower crisis," he added.

He further said, "We conduct drives three/four times a month to stop fishing by that net."

Each time 30-40 China Duari nets are seized, the official maintained.
