Heavy rain has started in Chattogram city from late night on Thursday. Various areas and lower areas in the city have been submerged due to the continuous rain. Road communication is being disrupted due to rising water on the roads.
Apart from low-lying areas in Chittagong, knee-to-waist water was seen on roads in various areas. This has caused extreme suffering to the workplace-oriented employees and the common people who go out for daily work.
These areas have been seen, the main road has been submerged in water from knee to waist level. Most of the shops along the road are closed due to inundation. In addition, people living in the lower areas of the city have experienced extreme suffering due to water entering their homes. Meanwhile, public transport crisis has arisen due to heavy rains. Office-going employees and ordinary people going out for urgent work are suffering due to the transport crisis. Commuters were seen standing for long periods of time at junctions of roads. Complaints against rickshaw-autorickshaw drivers for collecting double fare from fair fare.
Engineer Anik Barua, a resident of Muradpur area and working in a private company, told The Daily Observer that the house to the road has been submerged in waist-deep water due to continuous heavy rain since early morning.
He also said, 'I have been waiting for the car since 8 am to go to the office. But due to the transport crisis, we have to pay double fare to the destination. Our common people have to pay for everything. It must be followed. Nothing to do.'
According to the information of Meteorological Department, Chattogram sea port has issued local warning signal number 3. 112 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours till 9 am. Apart from this, rain or thundershowers with gusty winds at a speed of 45 to 60 km per hour may occur temporarily over North Bay of Bengal, coastal areas and seaports. Fishing boats and trawlers in the sea have been asked to approach the coast with caution until further notice.
On the other hand, fear of landslides due to heavy rainfall has created panic in the dangerous hills of the city. According to Hill Management Committee, there are 6,558 vulnerable settlements in 26 hills of the city. Families are living there with the risk of landslides in mind.They are yet to be evacuated to a safe haven.
Sajibul Islam Sajib, a resident of Akbarshah Jheel No 1, told The Daily Observer that it has been raining continuously since yesterday. Due to which we are in danger of landslides. Danger can strike at any moment. If you can go to a safe shelter, the fear will go away.
