NETRAKONA, Aug 1: An elderly man was killed and at least 40 others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in Kendua Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Pijahati Village under Maska Union of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Inchan Mia, 60, son of late Halu Mia, a resident of the area. He was a day-labourer by profession.

Police and local sources said a road construction work was going on at Pijati under the supervision of Rezaul Karim Sumon, contractor and a resident of the village. As one Atikur Rahman complained about the irregularities of the construction to the Local Government Department, Rezaul got angry as he believed that he worked transparently. As a sequel to it, Rezaul and Atikul along with their supporters were locked in a clash on Tuesday afternoon, which left at least 41 people from the both groups injured.

Of the injured, Inchan Mia, who was on Rezaul's side, was taken to Kendua Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Netrakona Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Other injured people were admitted to different hospitals and clinics.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kendua Police Station Enamul Haque confirmed the incident, adding that additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further collision.

However, the situation is now under control, the OC added.
