PIROJPUR, Aug 2:  Weekly Atghor Boat Haat in Nesarabad Upazila of the district has turned vibrant with sellers and customers.
This haat is based on a canal. But the canal cannot accommodate all boats. That is why boats are also set for sales along the canal banks.

A visit found lines of boats on the canal and along its banks.
Both sellers and customers are passing their busy time in boat trading at that traditional boat haat.

People of beel areas in Nesarabad, Nazirpur, neighbouring Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila in Pirojpur District, and Banaripara Upazila of Barishal District are used to small boats for different works.

In the rainy season, people of beel areas in these upazilas cannot make their communications without boats.
They need to collect grasses for cattle, guava, hog plum, catch fish requiring boats. A group of 4-5 men can use a small boat.
The haat sits on Friday. Most customers are from Nesarabad Upazila.

There is availability of boat-making wood in that upazila. And most people of this upazila have taken boat making as their profession.

Wood of Mehagani, Champol and raintree is used in making such boats.
At present, per piece boat is selling at Tk 2,500-8,000. Along with boats, oars are also selling at the haat. Some 250-300 boats are sold on haat day.

Beginning since Baishakh, the haat sitting continues till Ashwin. Normally a boat can be used for two/three years.
