Road mishaps claim 14 lives in seven districts

A total of 14 people have been killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in seven districts - Nilphamari, Barishal, Gopalganj, Munshiganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat and Mymensingh, in three days.

NILPHAMARI: Two young brothers were killed after being hit by an oil-carrying lorry in Syedpur Upazila of the district on Friday. 

The accident took place in Wapda Mor area of the upazila town at noon.

The deceased were identified as Sumon, 27, and his younger brother Siam, 22. They were the sons of Elias Ali, residents of Kacharipara area under  Sadar Upazila in the district.

According to police and local sources, the two deceased brothers were going towards Syedpur Town from Sadar Upazila in the district on Friday riding on a motorcycle. On the way, an oil-carrying lorry truck coming from the opposite direction collided with their in Wapda Mor area of the upazila town at noon, which left the duo critically injured. 

Local people then rescued the injured and took them to a hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared both of them dead on arrival.

Being informed, police have recovered the bodies.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Syedpur Police Station (PS) Shah Alam confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies will be handed over to the deceased's family after legal proceedings.

However, necessary action would be taken in this connection if any written complaint is received from the deceased's family members, the OC added.

BARISHAL: Two people were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Gournadi Upazila of the district on Friday morning.

The accident took place in Gournadi Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway under the upazila at around 6:45 am. 
The deceased were identified as pickup van driver Mahim, 20, son of Abu Taleb, hailed from Laxmipura area under Kalkini Upazila of Madaripur District; and passenger of the pickup van Alek Fakir, 45, son of late Abdul Fakir, a resident of Kabiraj area under Dudhal Union in Bakerganj Upazila of Barishal District.

It was known that a pickup van was heading towards Bakerganj Upazila in the district from Dhaka on Friday morning carrying household stuffs. On the way, the pickup van collided head-on with a covered van coming from the opposite direction in Gournadi Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway under the upazila at around 6:45 am, which left pickup van driver Mahim and passenger of the pickup van Alek Fakir dead on the spot and two others seriously injured. 

Being informed, Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies of the deceased.
They, later, handed those bodies over to the police, said Gournadi Fire Service Station Officer Md Bipul Hossain. 

Meanwhile, the two injured persons were also rescued and admitted to a hospital. The conditions of both of them were stated to be critical, Gournadi Fire Service Station Officer Md Bipul Hossain added.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Gournadi Highway PS Quamruzzaman confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers have seized both the vehicles from the scene.
 
However, the law enforcers are trying to identify the covered van and arrest its driver, said SI.
Necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the SI added.

GOPALGANJ: Four easy-bike passengers including two siblings were killed and several others injured after a bus rammed a battery-run easy-bike in Muksudpur Upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in front of the Lam-Mim Restaurant under Raghdi Union in the upazila. 
The deceased were identified as Abul Bashar Sheikh, 40, and Abul Khair Sheikh, 30, sons of Abu Raihan Sheik; Yaar Ali, 40, and Hasan Sheikh, 26. All of them were residents of Bishwambhardi Village in Muksudpur Upazila of the district.

It was known that a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Sakura Paribahan' hit a battery-run easy-bike while the bus was overtaking a truck coming from the same direction in front of the Lam-Mim restaurant under Raghdi Union in the upazila on Thursday, which left the two brothers dead on the spot and several others injured.

Local people then rescued the injured persons and took them to different hospitals including Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital.

Later on, Yaar Ali and Hasan Sheikh succumbed to their injuries in the afternoon while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital.

On information, police have recovered the bodies of the deceased and sent those to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies.

Bhanga Highway PS OC Abu Sayed Md Khairul Anam confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection. 

MUNSHIGANJ: A pickup driver and his assistant were killed in a road accident in Louhajang Upazila of the district early Thursday.

The accident took place in Khanbari intersection area adjacent to Padma Bridge North Toll Plaza under the upazila at early hours.  

The deceased were identified as Polash Chandra Das, 24, and Joy Chandra Das, 25. Both of them were residents of Shibpur Upazila in Narsingdi District.

Police and local sources said an unidentified vehicle hit a pickup van in Khanbari intersection area adjacent to Padma Bridge North Toll Plaza under the upazila at early hours, which left the driver of the pickup van and his assistant dead on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

However, the law enforcers also seized the pickup van and brought it to the PS.
Hasara Highway PS OC Kangson Kumar Singh confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

PORSHA, NAOGAON: An elderly man was killed in a road accident in Porsha Upazila of the district on Wednesday evening.
The accident took place in Habur Mor Eidgah area of Kalaibari in the upazila at around 7:30 pm. 

The deceased was identified as Harez Ali, 80, son of late Majed Ali, a resident of Kuladanga Village under the upazila.

It was known that Harez Ali was returning home from Kalni Bazar in the evening riding on a bicycle. On the way, a votvoti (local vehicle) coming from the opposite direction hit the bicycle in Habur Mor Eidgah area of Kalaibari, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene. 
Porsha PS OC Atiar Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

LALMONIRHAT: An elderly man was killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision between two auto-rickshaws in Aditmari Upazila of the district on Wednesday. 

The accident took place on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway near Aditmari Branch of Sonali Bank in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Aziz, 65, hailed from Sarkarerhaat Muslim Para area under Patgram Upazila in the district.

It was known that a battery-run auto-rickshaw was heading towards Aditmari from Kakina of Kaliganj Upazila in the afternoon. On the way, it collided head-on with another auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction near Aditmari Branch of Sonali Bank, which left five people seriously injured. 

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed them to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Abdul Aziz dead.  

Being informed, police recovered the body and kept it in the hospital. 
Aditmari PS OC Mahmud Un Nabi confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

MYMENSINGH: Two people including the driver of a battery-powered auto-rickshaw were killed after being crushed by a bus in Tarakanda Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Kakni Bazar area on the Phulpur-Mymensingh road under the upazila at around 7 am.
The deceased were identified as Sohel Mia, 28, son of late Abdur Rashid, a resident of Nalchapra area of the upazila, and Harunur Rashid, 40, son of late Abbas Ali of Tenguliakanda area.

According to police and local sources, a Dhaka-bound bus belonging to 'Janani Paribahan' from Bakshiganj collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction when it reached Kakni area in the morning. Two people including the auto-rickshaw driver died on the spot. 

At that time, the bus lost control and entered a shop. Later on, when the locals informed police, the police went to the scene and recovered the bodies.

Tarakanda PS SI Sajib Kumar Das said that the body was recovered and brought to the PS. 
Following the request of the relatives of the deceased, the bodies were then handed over without an autopsy. Legal action is pending in this case, the SI added.
