FENI, Aug 3: A total of 58 villages in two upazilas of the district became inundated rapidly since Friday morning due to rushing of water through 18 broken points of the Muhuri-Kakua-Silonia river embankment.

Non-stop downpour for three days and upstream hilly tide caused the breaching to the embankment.

According to local sources, the flood protection embankment of the Muhuri River developed breaking at 15 points in Shaldhor, Kawtali, Thana area, Mirzanagar,  and Dakkhin Teteshwar in Porshuram Upazila; flood water started to enter localities speedily; and equally the dam breaching occurred at three more points in Fulgazi Upazila.

Of the total 58 inundated villages, 30 ones were deluged at Porshuram while other 28 ones were inundated at Fulgazi.

Porshuram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afroza  Habib Shapla confirmed the flooding of 30 villages in the upazila.

Of these, 20 ones are: Dakkhin Shaldhor, Malipathor, and Paglirkul under Chithlia Union, Box Mahmud Union's Dakkhin Teteshwar, Kakua, Charigram, Baghmara, Zamiargaon Gram, Mirzanagar Union's Uttar Monipur, Dakkhin Monipur, Kali Krishnanagar, Godanagar, Kawtali, Daspara, and Porshurampur Municipality's Baupathar, Baurkhuma, Dubar Char, Kolapara, Anantapur, Uttar Guthuma Berabaria.

Fulgazi UNO Tania Bhuiyan confirmed the flooding of 28 villages in the upazila.

These villages are under Fulgazi, Amjad Haat, and Munsirhat unions.

She reported breaking of different local roads and submergence of croplands and inundated houses; ponds and fish enclosures were washed away.

According to upazila sources, about 18,000 families are lying marooned in Porshurampur and Fulgazi upazilas of Feni.

In July, flood also deluged localities in Porshuram and Fulgazi upazilas.

Locals complained, after the July flood, the broken parts of the embankment were repaired nominally by Water Development Board (WDB); that is why the dam broke again.

Executive Engineer of WDB  Rashed Shahriar said, on Friday night, the Muhuri River water flowed above 255 centimetre (cm) of the danger mark; but on Saturday, the river water receded and flowed above 160cm.

Locals said, low areas were flooded mostly due to the dam breaking  at Shaldhor point.

So far, 2,000 packets of dry food were distributed among water-confined people in Porshurampur and Fulgazi areas.

In cooperation with Fire Services, about 10,000 stranded families in Uttar Bazar area in the Porshurampur Municipality are being evacuated to safe places.

When contacted, Local MP Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim said, initiatives have been taken to repair the Muhuri River embankment permanently.
