DINAJPUR, Aug 2: Advance transplanted Aman (T-Aman) fields are fading due to drought in the district.

These advance T-Aman fields were planted in the end of Ashar by using rain water. But it did not rain in the mid-Shraban; so the early planted fields started to parch with growing saplings to fade.

To protect their  T-Aman fields from drying and fading, local farmers are making supplementary irrigation.

Through machine-based irrigation farmers are trying to protect saplings.

At the same time unplanted fields are prepared by irrigating for sapling plantations.

A recent visit found shallow machines elsewhere in wide T-Aman fields in Dinajpur.

While talking with this correspondent, farmers said, by using the rain water of Ashar, aromatic BRRI-90 (90 Jheera) and BRRI-51 (hybrid) saplings were planted; but in the absence of rain in Shraban, both sun shine and temperature turned severe; and fields became parched; and planted saplings are burning in the sun.

A farmer Amjad Ali of Lalmatia Village at No. 2 Forokkabad Union in Birol Upazila said, at the end of Ashar, he planted advance BRRI-90 saplings on seven bighas of land so that the lands can be used in potato farming in the next; but his fields were faded as it was not raining before mid-Shraban; now planted saplings have been faded.

To protect advance planted fields, he purchased a new machine at Tk 23,000 and his fields are irrigated.

Due to this supplementary irrigation, his per acre farming will increase by Tk 1,000 to 1,200, he added.

Another Azgor Ali said, he has also planted BRRI-51 saplings on four bighas by using the rain water of Ashar; this hybrid variety requires much water; but due to lack of rain his fields also started to parch; so, he irrigating his planted firlds, and his farming cost is also increasing.

Farmer Taslim of Rajapara said, he cultivates Aman, Boro and potato on three-cropping lands; now he is irrigating his fields by shallow machine to plan Aman saplings.

Farmers Abujar and Abdur Razzak of Umarpile Balupara Village in Sadar Upazila said, the rain water of Ashar dried out amid severe heat and warming; now fields are prepared by irrigating  water from ponds and ditches along road sides.

In fact, T-Aman cultivation is facing drought in Dinajpur, they added.

This season, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Dinajpur fixed the target of T-Aman on 2,70,550 hectares (ha) of land in the district, with rice production target of about 7.5 lakh tonnes; so far, advance Aman has been planted on  1,500 ha of land.

The targeted lands included high yielding species of 2,36,250 ha, hybrid 25,150 ha, and local species 9,150 ha.

This information was confirmed by DAE Deputy Director Md Nuruzzaman Mia.

Aman seedbeds were prepared on 10,550 ha of land in the district.

According to weather office, at present monsoon weather is prevailing in Dinajpur; it may rain any time; but the temperature is ranging between 36-38 degree Celsius; and on Monday at 3pm 35.6 degree Celsius highest temperature was recorded in Dinajpur.
