6 AL leaders killed during clash with students in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Aug 5: At least six local leaders of Awami Leader (AL) were killed and several others injured during a violent clash with students in the district on Sunday, first day of the non-cooperation movement led by the anti-discrimination student protesters.

The clash broke out around 1:30 pm in Madhabdi Bus Stand area of Sadar Upazila. Additionally, four protesters were injured by gunfire.
Officer-in-Charge of Madhabdi Police Station Kamruzzaman confirmed the deaths.

The deceased were identified as the chairman of Char Dighaldi Union Parishad and AL leader Delwar Hossain, 40, Juba League leader Delwar Hossain, 38, and Sramik League leaders Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan alias Nati Monir, 42, Anisur Rahman Sohel, 40, Nausher, 40, Ward Commissioner of Madhabdi Municipality Ward No. 11, and an unidentified individual, 38.

According to sources, the clash began when AL members fired indiscriminately at a procession of student protesters. At least six people were shot and injured. 

Among the injured, Suman Mia, 35, Soheb, 41, and Al Amin, 25, were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, while Mir Jahangir, 30, was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Amid the chaos, around 4,000 to 5,000 protesters headed towards the AL supporters, who eventually fled. Six AL members took shelter in a mosque near the Madhabdi Bus Stand but were dragged out by the protesters and beaten to death on the spot.

Additionally, a large number of students and locals gathered at the Jailkhana Mor area in the town, leading a protest march from Jailkhana intersection to Narsingdi Stadium at around 1 pm.
