Flood situation improves in Feni

FENI, Aug 5: The flood situation has improved a bit in Porshuram and Fulgazi upazilas of the district as it was not raining for the last few days.

Over the last two days, ending on Sunday, the water of the Muhuri River started to fall, and, at present, it is flowing below the danger mark. 

With the receding the flood water, scars of flood damages of roads and croplands are emerging out.
According to sources at the upazila administration, 19,000 families are lying marooned at Porshuram while 7,800 ones are confined at Fulgazi; in Porshuram Upazila, 710 hectares (ha) of cropland were damaged while 466 ha of cropland were damaged in Fulgazi Upazila.

Sources in both upazilas said, it is not possible to exactly estimate damages of roads, fisheries and others at this moment.
Porshuram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afroza Habiba Shapla confirmed 19,000 families water-confined in the upazila; among them, 1,200 packets of dry food and 13 metric tons (MT) of rice were distributed; and stocks of dry food and rice are adequate.

Fulgazi UNO Tania Bhuiyan confirmed 7,800 families marooned in the upazila; among them 1,100 packet dry food and 50 MT rice were distributed; and stocks of dry food and rice are adequate.

Earlier, due to 3-4 day non-stop heavy raining and upstream hilly tidal water, the flood protection embankment of the Muhuri-Kakua-Silonia rivers broke; in these two upazilas, 83 villages were inundated including 35 at Porshuram and 48 at Fulgazi; at present, 26,000 families are lying marooned in these two upazilas.

On Friday (July 2) at 11:30am, the embankment broke at 12 points in different areas of Porshuram including Shaldhor, Kawtali, Mirzanagar, and Dakkhin Teteshwar. At the same time, three points broke at Fulgazi. 

A total of 35 areas of Porshuram were damaged; of these, Dakkhin Shaldhor, Malipathor, and Paglirkul under Chithlia Union, Box Mahmud Union's Dakkhin Teteshwar, Kakua, Charigram, Baghmara, Zamiargaon Gram, Mirzanagar Union's Uttar Monipur, Dakkhin Monipur, Kali Krishnanagar, Godanagar, Kawtali, Daspara, and Porshurampur Municipality's Baupathar, Baurkhuma, Dubar Char, Kolapara, Anantapur, and Uttar Guthuma Berabaria are included.

Fulgazi UNO Tania Bhuiyan confirmed the flooding of 28 villages in the upazila.

These villages are under Fulgazi, Amjad Haat, and Munsirhat unions.

On Friday afternoon, due to breaking at three points of the dam, 48 villages were flooded in Fulgazi Union, Amjad Haat and Munsirhat unions.

According to sources at Water Development Board, on August 4 at 6pm, the Muhuri River was flowing below 5 centimetres (cm) at the Porshuram Point; and it was flowing below 222cm of danger mark at the Fulgazi Point.

Alauddin Ahmed  Chowdhury Nasim, MP,  said, an initiative to build a permanent embankment centring the Muhuri River is underway.
