MUNSHIGANJ, Aug 5: Two people were killed and scores injured in a tripartite clash among protestors, Awami League (AL) and police in the district town on Sunday morning.
Though the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, they were aged around 30 to 35 respectively.
A tense situation has been prevailing in and around the district town following the incident.
It was known that the protesters started gathering in Muktijoddha Sculpture near the SuperMarket area since 10 am as per their schedule programme.
After a few minutes, fellows of the ruling AL' students wing Chhatra League and youth wing Juba League equipped with weapons chased them and took control over the area.
Enraged by it, the protesters again chased them after reorganising, resulting in chases and counter-chases in the area.
At one stage, police arrived on the scene and allegedly started firing with rubber bullet, charging batons and lobbing tear gas, which left several people injured.
Later on, the injured were rescued and rushed to Munshiganj Sadar Hospital, where the physicians declared two of them dead.
Besides, crude bombs were also exploded during the clash.
District Deputy Commissioner Md Abu Jafar Ripon said they learned about the deaths of two people in the clash.
He, however, said police have been instructed not to fire and they did so.
