RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR, Aug 6: Lion portions of low areas at all unions and one municipality of Ramgati Upazila in the district became inundated due to week-long abnormal tide.

According to Meteorological Department, in the last several days, the highest 142 centimetre of rainfall was recorded at Ramgati; communications became disrupted due to damages of roads, bridge and culverts; fish farms and enclosures were washed away.

Strong current uprooted trees, making it difficult for Palli Bidyut Samiti to keep the electricity supply; due to manpower crisis, electricity lines  can't be repaired rapidly.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office here, of 1,598 hectares (ha) of Aman seedbeds, 600 ha of seedbeds were submerged.

Besides, 410 ha of Aush seedbeds were damaged while 20 ha of vegetables were damaged.

A visit found local muddy and cemented road damaged in different areas in Char Abdullah, Char Alexandar, Borkheri, Charramiz, Chargazi, Charalgi, Charpouragachha, and Charbadam unions.

Rob Road in the upazila, Muktijoddha Chhayedul Haq Road in Ramgati Municipality, Tahshildar Road, boundary road of Ward No. 9 and Ward  No. 4, and more than one road at Ward No. 3 were damaged.

Asolpara and Launch Ghat Road of Char Alexandar Union, Poura Alexandar Kitchen Market, and other lanes and roads were submerged.

Besides, Nooria Hazirhat Matha to Karamotia Road developed diving down at different points.

In Chargazi area, Sebagram Road, Kharulkandi Road and others were submerged.

As flood is not receding rapidly about 15,000 people are home-confined in Chargazi Boyarchar.

At Charabdullah Union 5,000 and about 2,000 people at Char Alexandar are passing days in inhuman condition.

Many were seen pumping out water by cutting roads and setting pipes.

Dwellers of damaged areas Golam Rabbani, Abdus Samad, and Maksudur Rahman said, "We never saw so raining; we are passing days in untold sufferings."

People are water-confined in Ward No. 1,2,4,7, and 8 at Chargazi Union.

Now, water recession is halted due to problematic doors of the sluice gate regulators, they added.

Union Chairman Tawhidul Islam Suman said, "We are trying to remove stranded water."

Char Abdullah Union Chairman Kamal Uddin said, as it is the river-induced union, public suffering continues and damages occur after abnormal tide and rain.

District Agriculture Officer Abu Sayeed Tareq said, if the rain water remains stranded for more than two/three days, seedbeds are likely to be affected.

"We are trying to remove water under the leadership of UNO," he added.

UNO Sayed Amjad Hossain said, some water-stranded areas have been inspected to address the water stagnation; view-exchanges were made with affected Aman farmers.

Steps have been taken to remove water from seedbeds, the UNO added.
