TANGAIL, Aug 7: People of 20 villages are suffering communications due to a collapsed bridge over the Bairan River at Paiska Union in Dhanbari Upazila of the district.

The bridge built in 2018 over the river in Bhatkura Village collapsed four years back.

Locals said, sub-standard raw materials were used in the construction of the bridge. LGED avoided the public protest about using the sub-standard materials.

Soon after the construction, a quarter lifted sand from beneath the basement of the bridge. Later on, after being hit by flood current, the middle pillar got broken.

According to sources at Local Government Engineering Department (LGED)-Dhanbari, in 2018, the bridge over the Bairan River was built, financed by the Asian Development Bank in 2013-14 financial year; the work order was given to a local contracting firm.

A visit found the Bairan River flowing through Bhatkura Village, having waist-water; water hyacinths are floating on its water; broken parts of the bridge are lying scattered.

There is no system of crossing the river. Due to the sand lifting from the basement, living houses and agriculture lands along the river banks were devoured by the river.

Locals said, most people of the area are of farming profession; it needs them to round about five kilometre road distance to take their agri-items to the town; and it costs higher money and kills work time.

Anwar Hossain of Bhatkura Village said, the bridge broke after one and half years of the construction; it would take 10 minutes to go to the upazila town by passing the bridge; now people have to go to the town by rounding different roads; it is causing sufferings to villagers.

Locals Liakat Ali and Sheuli Begum complained, public representatives did not heed their complaint.
The bridge has been lying broken for the last four years. They demanded another bridge to keep communications between people of two banks of the river.

Living houses of Shamsher Ali, Nepal Chandra Sarkar and Thandu Mia were devoured by the river. They said, if the breaking continues, they fear to turn destitute.

Union Member Golam Mostafa said, Bhatkura Village is at the east side of the bridge while Dorichandabari Village at the west side; the bridge was built according to the long demand of people.

Dhanbari Upazila Engineer Shafiqul Islam Mandal said, "I have joined newly. I am not informed of the matter. After inquiry, necessary measures will be taken according to the demand of people."
