RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR, Aug 8: After being hit by tidal water, a five-metre bridge on Alexandar-Sonapur Road at Nabiol crossing in Charalgi Union under Ramgati Upazila of the district collapsed early Thursday night, disrupting local communications.

According to field sources, communications have been disrupted from Alexander to Sonapur (Noakhali Sadar and Subarnachar).

Besides, a big hole was created on the road near the bridge.

Locals made barricades besides the road to avoid any type of accident.

Upazila administration advised people for using the road from Nooria Haat to Bhai Bhai Tehmuni to go to the upazila town.

On Monday, the tidal current broke one part of the bridge.  On Tuesday, report of the bridge collapse appeared in newspapers.

Later on, 10/12 labourers of the Road and Highways Department (RHD) started repairing work. But they can't work properly due to strong water current.

Already geo bags and other tools have been brought to damaged places.

Locals demanded a permanent bailey bridge at the spot.

A teacher Nurul Alam, local Jamal Uddin and others said, "Now we are going to our work places by rounding about five kilometre village road."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sayed Amjad Hossain said, "The road and the bridge will be repaired. We are trying to install a bailey bridge."

RHD Executive Engineer Jahirul Islam said, "We are working for the last four days. A bailey bridge will be brought from another place to set up there."
