CHAR FASSON, BHOLA, Aug 9: Women are making their earnings by working   in different plastics recycling and processing factories in Char Fasson Upazila of the district.

According to local sources, plastic recycling and processing factories have been set up in Kutubganj and Mukharabandha unions in the upazila.

Bhangara traders or small traders are purchasing old plastic bottles and damaged plastic items by rounding from village to village and storing these at different haats and bazaars in 21 unions of the upazila; and after purchase, plastic factories are sorting these, and later on, they are supplying the sorted items to Dhaka and different parts of the country. They re-sell these at Tk 40 per kilogram (kg).

A recent visit to a plastic factory at Kutubganj at Ward No. 6 under Char Fasson Municipality found busy labourers; some were seen washing plastic bottles and cutting and drying in sun; some were opening corks of bottles; daily 50 men and women work at this factory.

A woman labourer Rina Aktar said, "Along with two meals daily, I get Tk 5,000 monthly; it is a little assistance in the earning of my husband alone."

Like her, 25 women are working at the plastic factory.

"We had no work before; now our unemployment is over by working in plastic factories," said labourers Salauddin and Shafiullah.

Factory Owner Sharif said, they purchase old plastic items from hawkers at Tk 20-35 per kg.

After sorting, these are sent to Dhaka and other areas, he added.

He further said, chair, bucket, jar, and other articles are made from plastics.

Recycled plastics are also exported to Europe and other countries.

This alternative use of plastics is preventing environmental pollution; and in plastic processing and supplying factories, employments are created for both youth men and women.

Plastic trader Machchu Mahajan said, "We collect clean plastics from hawkers; later on, we process these and make different items."

The entire process is benefitting the environment, said another trader Noor Uddin.

Once plastics would be dumped in canal, and river, and these were becoming threats to the environment, and now these are being recycled and processed in environment-friendly places, he added.

At present, there are about 100 plastic waste traders at Char Fasson.

Inspector ((In-Charge) of the Department of Environment Tota Mia said, plastics lying here and there are harmful for environment; now the environment is getting protected from pollution for the plastic processing.

Charfasson Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nawreen Haq said, as easily available and cheaper, plastic items have got popularity; people are used to throw away their used plastic items, harming the environment; but this initiative of plastic processing is good for people.
