Islam succeeds in Latkan cultivation in Thakurgaon

THAKURGAON, Aug 10: 'Industry is the mother of good luck'. This proverb has come true in the case of Mohammad Islam.

He has got success in Latkan (Burmese grape) cultivation and is inspiring others.
Latkan cultivation requires less industry and farming cost. 

He had been doing Latkan businesses for a long time. He would collect Lakan from different areas and sell in his own areas. 

Once he came to see Latkan cultivation in Kishoreganj area and became encouraged to cultivate this fruit.

He resides in Dolur Haat area at Aksa Union in Sadar Upazila.

A recent visit found Latkan fruits in cluster form in his garden; traders are coming from different areas regularly to purchase Latkans from his garden.

He is also personally selling Latkans in different areas.

Islam said, "I started my Latkan farming on 40 decimal lands with 150 saplings three years back; one year later, fruits started to appear thinly; but this year fruits have appeared hugely."

"I think I can sell Latkans worth Tk 2-3 lakh yearly. Soil of Thakurgaon is suitable for Latkan farming. Youths are coming from different areas to see my garden," he added.

He further said, "They are asking advice from me for starting commercial Latkan farming."

A visitor from Nilphamari Sadar Upazila Farhadul Islam said, "I came to see Latkan trees having fruits in cluster form from top to bottom. I find it good. Now I am planning to replace my litchi garden with Latkan."

Another Shafiqul Islam said, "I have come from Panchagarh to see Latkan garden. I became impressed to see such beautiful Latkan garden."

"I am planning to raise a Latkan garden," he added.

Saiful Alam came from Thakurgaon District Town to purchase Latkans directly from the garden.

He said, "I never ate fresh Latkans from trees. I have come along with my family to see the garden."

"I think Latkan cultivation can change life. New employments can be created centring the Latkan farming," he added.

According to Upazila Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), soil of Thakurgaon is suitable for Latkan cultivation; many people are becoming interested in Latkan cultivation.

Latkan trees start to bloom in March and fruits mature within 4-5 months.

Latkan fruits are available from June to August.

According to experts, Latkan is nutritious and medicinal containing huge Vitamin-C.

Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishna Ray said, "I inspected Latkan garden of Mohammad Islam.  Now many are showing interest in Latkan cultivation."

"Latkan farming is profitable. I hope commercial farming of Latkan will increase in the district," the official added.

Deputy Director of the DAE-Thakurgaon Sirajul Islam said, this fruit is very nutritious and profit-making; seeing Islam's success, many are coming to cultivate  Latkan commercially; they are given necessary advice from the DAE.

"I hope there will be a revolution of Latkan cultivation  in Thakurgon soon," he added.
