Three individuals were killed and five others injured as a jeep plunged into a roadside ditch at Rajasthali upazila in Rangamati district on Tuesday night.
The accident took place at around 8pm in Pankatachari area on the Bilaichari-Rajasthali border road in the upazila.
Among the deceased, two were identified as Chinu Mong Marma, 20, son of Puchingmong Marma, and Manu Chakma, residents of Balumura village in the upazila while the identities of another could not be known immediately.
Rajasthali Police Station officer-in-charge Iqbal Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to locals, the accident occurred when a jeep, locally known as 'Chander Gari', with several construction workers was returning from Bilaichari upazila. On the way, its driver lost control over the steering and overturned into a roadside ditch, leaving one dead on the spot and seven others critically injured.
The injured were taken to Rajasthani Upazila Health Complex, where two of them succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, they said.
Later, two of the critically injured were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better treatment, added the locals.
