97 looted arms, 6,585 rounds of ammunition recovered till Wednesday: RAB

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in separate drives recovered 97 firearms looted from several police stations, outposts and other locations across the country until Wednesday.

A RAB press release on Wednesday confirmed the information, adding," Apart from the firearms RAB also recovered 6,585 rounds of ammunition, 30 sound grenades and 28 magazines."
Huge number of arms and ammunition were looted during attacks on police stations and other secured areas before and after August 5.

After nine days of looting from various police stations across the country, police recovered 309 arms and 6,258 rounds of bullets. Police headquarters confirmed the matter in a mobile SMS on Wednesday.

Besides, 318 tear gas shells, two tear gas grenades and nine sound grenades have been recovered so far, the SMS reads.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 35 firearms and 275 rounds bullet from the local people and other sources, looted during the attacks from various police stations in the city on the eve of the victory celebration of the students on August.

RAB sources said that 14 of these recovered firearms were damaged. According to RAB-7, miscreants ransacked, set fire and looted various police stations of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

Heavy arms like Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs) and Chinese rifles are among the recovered weapons, the elite force said here today.

Along with the SMG, Chinese rifles, shotguns, pistols and gas guns, 275 rounds of ammunition of various types have been recovered in the operation, RAB said.

The recovered arms, ammunition and other equipment were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) of the CMP.

Celebrations broke out across the port city after Sheikh Hasina fled to India  on August 5. 

Several police establishments were attacked, set on fire and arms and ammunition were looted.

Several police stations in Chattogram city, including Kotwali, Pahartali, Patenga and EPZ, were set ablaze and looted during the attacks and acts of sabotage were committed by criminals.

In response, the interim government's Home Affairs Adviser Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, ordered the immediate recovery of looted weapons and ammunitions.

The RAB Forces, in coordination with Bangladesh Army and other security forces, have been working across the country to retrieve the stolen arms and bring the law and order situation under control, added the statement.
