Bangladesh series very important to India, says Jay Shah

Bangladesh is set to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024, but due to political unrest in the country following Sheikh Hasina's stepping down as Prime Minister, the ICC has been considering a change of venue. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah claimed that the ICC approached him with an offer to host the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup in October, which he declined.

"They asked if we would host the World Cup, and I firmly declined," Shah told the Times of India on August 15. "October falls during the monsoon season here and we are already scheduled to host the Women's ODI World Cup next year. I don't want to give the impression that we are looking to host consecutive World Cups."

There have been previous instances where World Cups were relocated from their original host countries. For example, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Men's T20 World Cup 2021 was shifted from India to Oman and the UAE, although India remained the official "host." More recently, the Under-19 World Cup 2024 was moved from Sri Lanka to South Africa after the ICC suspended the Sri Lankan board. However, the final decision by the ICC on the location of the Women's World Cup is expected on August 20.

In addition to discussing the Women's World Cup, Shah also addressed the upcoming Bangladesh's tour to India next month. "We haven't had any discussions with the authorities in Bangladesh yet," Shah said. "A new government is in place there. They might contact us, or I will reach out to them. The Bangladesh series is very important to us."

The red-ball series is scheduled to begin on September 19 in Chennai, with the second Test set to be played from September 27 to October 1 in Kanpur. The three T20i matches between India and Bangladesh are slated to take place in Gwalior, Delhi and Hyderabad on October 6, 9 and 12 respectively.
