DUMURIA, KHULNA, Aug 16: Many farmers in Dumuria Upazila of the district are changing their lot by farming vegetables on enclosure dam.

Along with fish cultivation, they are making extra earnings from cultivating vegetables on their fish enclosure dam.

A grower of Kulbaria Village at Atlia Union Asaduzzaman said, "I have cultivated bean, papaya, Malabar spinach, ridge gourd, okra, cucumber and brinjal in my enclosure dam around."

"I took advice from Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Insad Ibne Amin two years back, and later on, I was inspired much to bring my fish enclosure under the vegetable cultivation," he added.

He further said, four years back, spaces of the enclosure dam would remain vacant.

"I have vegetable cultivation on 25 bighas of land on the bank. In the last year, I got profit of about Tk 10 lakh from the fish bank. I hope till March in the next year, my vegetable sale will stand at over Tk 4 lakh," he maintained.

"I am grateful to the upazila agriculture officer," he said. '

His five-member family is running well on his earnings.

He said, there is an expense in fencing the vacant places on the enclosure dam every year and in spraying insecticide on winter vegetables.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Insad Amin said, "After seeing success of Asaduzzaman, many farmers of the upazila started vegetable farming on banks of fish farms and ponds. Our agriculture department officials are assisting them in always including technology."
