WHO’s warning on Mpox outbreak

Dear Sir

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the alarm on the escalating mpox outbreak in Africa, declaring it a global public health emergency. This declaration, the highest possible under international health regulations, highlights the severe and worsening situation, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its neighboring countries.

The WHO's decision follows the rapid spread of a new clade of mpox, previously unreported in several affected regions. The emergence of this new variant, coupled with its swift transmission, underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive and coordinated global response.

Countries are now called upon to strengthen their health systems, enhance surveillance, and support affected regions with necessary medical and logistical resources. Public health officials and international organizations must collaborate to implement effective containment strategies and public awareness campaigns.

This declaration serves as a stark reminder of the interconnected nature of global health and the critical importance of prompt and unified action in combating emerging threats.
