Bangladeshi students under the banner of 'Awaz Tulo Nari' (Raise Your Voice, Women) on Friday afternoon formed a human chain at the base of Raju Sculpture on Dhaka University (DU) campus demanding capital punishment of the rapists and killers of a doctor in Kolkata.

Besides, the protesters demanded swift trial of all incidents of sexual assaults in Kolkata as well as in Bangladesh. The agitators, mainly DU students, said that slow pace in trial of sexual harassments in the country exacerbated incidents of such heinous acts.

A post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The victim's family alleged that she was gang raped and murdered subsequently.

This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities, leading to protests beyond Kolkata. During the rally at DU, students carried banners and chanted slogans such as, "From Tonu to Moumita, from Cumilla to Kolkata. Hanging the Rapist is the Only Solution."

DU Anthropology student Anika Parvin said, "Today, we stand here to seek justice for such incidents. In Bangladesh, countless cases of rape are never reported.

Even when cases are reported, there is no justice. Sometimes, incidents are only known if they go viral on social media.

We want an end to such incidents and if they do occur, we want the victims be served justice. We demand that women receive justice everywhere, from Kolkata to Dhaka."

The protesters said that amidst so many rape cases in the country, the situation is unmanageable. There is no proper remedy, and such cases are not covered adequately by media houses. In some cases, it takes years just to frame charges, and the judicial process can drag on for years.

DU Linguistics student Sanjida Anwar Chowdhury said freedom to live independently must be ensured regardless of gender identity. Sanjida emphasised being a human is important not assault on women.

"When you stare at a woman, imagine about your mother and sister," she said, adding, everyone must learn to respect women. She demanded hanging of rapists on open stages so that no one dares to commit such a crime in future.

Another student said, "We have a lot of wounds in our hearts. When we walk on roads, we need to think of those who fall victims like Tanu and Moumita. We live in a country where it needs more than eight years to complete trial of a rape case. Be human so that we can feel safe at every corner in the world."

When a friend attempts to commit such an act, or tries to touch you inappropriately, you must slap him or report him to the police without fail, the speakers opined.

They mentioned that 99 per cent of women in the country have experienced some form of harassment, mostly from friends or relatives.
