The chairman of Dinajpur's Bochaganj Upazila Parishad has been arrested in a case filed by students while attempting to file a complaint on Friday night.
The detained Afshar Ali, had gone to Bochapganj Police Station on Friday night to file a complaint regarding an attack on his home, but instead found himself arrested.
Abu Bakar Siddique Rasel, officer-in-charge of the police station, confirmed that Ali was arrested in connection with a case filed by Faisal Mostak, the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dinajpur.
The case relates to an alleged attack on a student protest march on July 18, during which members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jubo League, and Awami League were accused of assaulting the protesters.
Additionally, the FIR names former State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury as the main accused, along with 24 others, and includes 70 unidentified individuals. Following his arrest, Afshar Ali was sent to Dinajpur Jail, added the OC.
Meanwhile, Ali alleged that he went into hiding after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and fall of AL government on August 5. During his absence, some miscreants attacked on his house and eventually set fire to it. Following the incident, he went to the police station to file a complaint.
Upon learning of his presence at the police station, students and locals associated with the Anti-Discrimination Movement surrounded the station, demanding his resignation. The crowd was eventually calmed down by the presence of military personnel.
Under pressure from the students and public, Ali verbally announced his resignation from his position of Upazila Chairman.
