Veteran journalist Shafik Rehman who returns to the country after living six years in the United Kingdom has said he wishes that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will remain alive.
"I wish Sheikh Hasina remains alive. It will her punishment," he said after landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday (August 18).
Shafik Rehman arrived in Dhaka from London by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at about 12:15pm. Journalist leaders and members of the BNP and its affiliated organizations welcomed him with flowers at the airport.
Shafik Rahman was emotionally overwhelmed when meeting his colleagues after such a long time.
He left the country in 2018 and has returned after six years.
On August 17, 2023, journalist Shafik Rehman, along with Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of the daily Amar Desh, and three others, was sentenced to seven years in prison in a case involving a conspiracy to abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
They were also fined Tk 5,000 each, with an additional one-month prison sentence in case of non-payment.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy testified in the case on November 13, 2022.
On August 3, 2015, a police officer filed the case at Paltan police station.
Shafik Rehman was arrested on April 16, 2016, in connection with this case.
Later, he was released on bail and had to leave the country.
