A farmer was killed and another injured after being hit by a truck at Khetlal upazila in Joypurhat disatrict on Sunday.
The tragic incident occurred around 12:00 PM on Sunday in Mundail area on the Itakhola-Nishchinta road.
The deceased Rafiqul Islam, 48, was a resident of Talora Baiguni village in Kalai Upazila and son of the late Joynal Abedin. Meanwhile, the injured was identified as a van driver Sirajul.
Khetlal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident.
Eyewitnesses said that around 11:30 AM, Rafiqul Islam was heading to Itakhola market, sitting on the top of sacks of rice on a van, to sell his produce. On the way, a truck hit their van from the behind, causing both Rafiqul and the van driver to be fell onto the road.
The truck driver and his assistant fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Local residents rushed them to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, due to Rafiqul's critical condition, he was transferred to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
OC Anwar Hossain stated that no complaint has been filed by the victim's family, but the legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is lodged.
