Now, the jute farmers are seen busy cutting and processing the crop with much enthusiasm in the district as harvesting is going on in full swing.
The new jute has appeared in the local haats and bazars. Farmers and agricultural officials expect to exceed the production target as the crop grew well and its cultivation area was higher than the target.
Per mound (40-kg) jute is being sold at Tk 3,000 to Tk 3,200. Traders from different districts come here and buy jute as per their demand and send those to different jute mills across the country.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Panchagarh Office sources said jute was cultivated on 10,000 hectares of land in the district this year with the production target of 20.18 bells.
Selim, a farmer of Sabouspara Village said, "I cultivated jute on one bigha of land. Around eight maunds of jute were produced from per bigha (33 decimal) of land and I earned Tk 14,000 by selling jute after mitigating all expenditure."
Deputy Director (DD) of the Panchagarh DAE Abdul Motin said that jute production has been good as the weather condition is favourable this year.
The department has given training on uses of modern technologies to the farmers for boosting its production, the DAE DD added.
Besides, the farmers got jute seeds and fertiliser from the department at free of cost. —BSS
