Aus paddy harvesting nears completion in Panchagarh District as the farmers and agricultural officials are happy to see its bumper production.

Department of Agricultural Extensions (DAE) officials attributed bumper Aus yield to favourable weather condition.

They said Aus cultivation is lucrative for the farmers due to its less expense as the farmers can row Aus seedling after harvesting Boro paddy and plant T- Aman after harvesting Aus paddy.

About 20 maund Aus paddy can be produced from one bigha of land, they added.

Farmer Golam Kibria of Soundordigi village said he has cultivated BREE-82 variety of Aus paddy on three bigha of land as he got 50 maund of paddy.

Per maund Aus paddy is being sold at Taka 750 to 800 in the local hat, he said, adding, "I have earned a profit of Taka 30 thousands after meeting all expenditure as I got extra profit of Taka 6 thousand by selling its straw".

DAE office also said transplanting of Aus seedling started in April and its harvesting began in August.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Abdul Motin told BSS that 500 hectares of lands have been brought under Aus cultivation this year with setting the production target of 2800 metric tons of paddy.

DAE has supplied Aus seeds, fertilizers and given technology support to farmers free of cost.

Aus cultivation is increasing in the district day by day as its cultivation is lucrative. So, farmers are showing keen interest to cultivate the Aus paddy.    —BSS
