Different local fishes, such as Shol (striped snakehead), Khoilsha (striped gourami), Taaki (spotted snakehead), Koi (climbing fish), shrimp, Gojar (giant snakehead), Tengra (small catfish), Chitol, Shingh (stinging catfish), and Kalibaus, are caught hugely in rivers, canals, beels, ponds and other water-filled marshes in the upazila.
Heavy rainfall pushed up water levels in these water bodies, with arrival local fishes.
Both fishermen and locals are catching fishes by angler and nets.
Local fishes have been arriving hugely at local markets for the last one week.
After the ban time, Hilsa fishes are not coming so way from the sea due to adverse weather.
According to sources at the Upazila Fisheries office though local fishes are set to disappear from water bodies across the country due to climate change, natural disaster, unawareness, and reckless insecticide application in croplands, different species of local fishes are available in the upazila.
Locals said, local fishes are very tasty. But consumers said, compared to last several years, prices of local fishes are higher this year.
Amtali Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer SM Mahmudul Hasan said, local fishes are disappearing due to water pollution, raised marsh beds, and current net.
The Fisheries Department is working on awareness making about this, the official added.
