RAJSHAHI, Aug 20: This is the last month of Bharda for collection of continuing egg and fry of different fishes including ruhi, kalibaus and fresh water shark from the Padma River in Poba Upazila of the district.

The three-month long collection of egg and fry of different species of fishes began by Ashar. During this time, local fishermen manage their three months' living means by collecting the egg and fry from Padma.

One fisher Hannan Ali has been collecting egg and fry from the Padma River for about last 37 years.

"I catch egg and fry from the Padma River for about 37 years. Just seeing egg, I can say how much it will grow up. I can also say by 95 per cent what fish it will be. Eggs of Aikhra fish come with water, along with that of ruhi."

This egg and fry experience is shared with other fishers including Madud, Monsur and Chand.

They said, 10-12 fishers are carrying out egg and fry collection at Shyampur Ghat, 15-20 ones at Sahapur, and 8-8 at Tangon; but fry is mostly collected at Yusufpur and Charghat.

According to sources at the Fisheries Office-Rajshahi, 1,700 fishers catch fishes in Padma; of them, at least 200 ones collect egg and fry; they catch fishes from Shympur to Charghat.

During Ashar, Sraban, and Bhadra, they continue catching of egg and fry in Padma. They sell collected egg and fry to pond fish farmers; and many others sell egg and fry to consumers for livelihood.

Fisher Hannan Ali said, many fishers sell fry along the Padma banks.

"We have to stay in bamboo-made scaffolding in the Padma River for 24 hours. We also need to lift nets every hour for keeping alive the fry," he said.

"Yet we don't get egg and fry every day. Sometimes, we get fingerlings for three days at a time," he added.

Many fishers move from place to place for selling hatchery egg and fry. Per kilogram (kg) egg and fry is selling at Tk 7,000-10,000. But per 100 gram egg and fry of Padma is selling at Tk 500-700.

On an average, a fisher can collect 200-300 gram of egg and fry worth about Tk 1,500-1,700.

Egg and fry are netted by 15-17 hand net. This net is not much costly.

Md Masud has been collecting egg and fry for about last 20 years.  He said, 50-100 grams of egg and fry are netted daily.

"Pond owners come to us for purchasing egg and fry," he added.

He further said, egg and fry of hatchery do not grow rapidly, but river egg and fry grow rapidly.

Hatchery fry grows up to one kg in pond in three months while river fry grow up to about two kg in pond in three months.

That is why the demand of the Padma fry is high, he said again.

Poba Upazila Senior Agriculture Officer Md Asaduzzaman said, it is a punishable offence to collect fish egg or fry from the Padma River; but fishermen can  collect egg or fry from Padma for farming in ponds; there are 3,087 fishers at Poba; of them, 1,700 catch fishes in the Padma River; and they collect egg and fry from Padma and sell these.

Rajshahi District Fisheries Officer Jahangir Alam said, in Rajshahi the demand of egg and fry are met from government-private hatcheries; of the demand, 15 per cent egg and fry are collected from Padma.
