A court has imposed restriction on former managing director of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) Taqsem A Khan leaving the country.

Responding to a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge and Senior Special Judge Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order imposing the restriction on Thursday (August 22).
ACC's court inspector Amir Hossain confirmed the matter, saying that the restriction on leaving the country has been imposed for the next 60 days.

Apart from the special police super of the Immigration Branch, authorities concerned including the special branch of Bangladesh Police have been given directives to take necessary steps regarding the restriction on leaving the country.

In its prayer, the ACC said it has already received complaints of corruption against Taqsem. The ACC is investigating into the complaints.

Sources said Taqsem might flee the country. If he can leave the country, investigation into his corruption and wealth may be affected. Because of it, imposing restriction on his foreign travel is necessary.

Earlier on Wednesday (August 14),  Taqsem A Khan resigned from his post citing illness. He sent his resignation letter through online.

In Wasa's history, Taqsem A Khan is the longest-serving MD. On October 14, 2023, he was appointed for the 7th time for a new three-year-long tenure to the post. He was first appointed to the post on October 14, 2009, shortly after the Awami League came to power.

His 15-year-long tenure, however, is heavily criticised for failing to deal with Dhaka's water issues.

Many have raised questions as to why Taqsem has been reappointed to the post time and time again despite various allegations of corruption and irregularities.

His tenure also saw the Wasa water price rise 16 times.

Many have also pointed out that Taqsem hardly followed the regulations and ruled the Dhaka Wasa with absolute power.
