13 villages submerged of Paikgachha in Khulna

Over 15,000 marooned people are now staying in distressed condition as hundreds of villagers failed to repair the river embankments of Paikgachha after 24 hours of hectic voluntary efforts.

The distressed people have already evacuated on the roads and different shelter homes yesterday. Different voluntary, social organizations and Bangladesh Navy are being distributed relief and necessary materials among the flood affected people.

Talking to BSS, Mahera Nazneen, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Paikgachha said, the villagers are trying to repair the embankment during last two days but they yet to do this due to heavy tidal wave.

They, along with other organizations including the Navy are distributing relief goods and giving treatments to the distressed and sick people, she said, adding that the government has already sent adequate relief goods for the distressed people.
 
Besides, Bangladesh Navy in a press release said that they have distributed relief goods and provided treatment among the villagers.

Navy men are working to shift the flood affected people to safe places, said the press release adding that the villagers have been requested to contact the Navy control room on 01769781111 or naval Contingent Commander Mahfuzur Rahman Farhad on 01769763375 numbers if any emergency.

At least 13 villages, fish enclosures and crop fields were inundated by the heavy tides in Paikgasa upazila of the district after the river embankment has collapsed.

Locals said that at around 1pm on Thursday, the WAPDA embankment at the southern end of the 22nd Polder in Deluti union, was broken due to the high tide
