The sixteen spillways of the Kaptai Hydro-Electric Power Plant in Rangamati were closed around 2pm after being open for six hours.
Earlier, in the morning, the authorities opened the gates after the water level of the Kapatai Lake approached the danger mark due to continuous.
Engineer ATM Abduzzaher, manager of Karnaphuli Hydropower Station, said as water level of Kaptai Lake has crossed 108 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL), the sluice gates were opened by six inches at 8AM on Sunday.
During that time, 9,000 cusecs of water per second were discharged into the Karnaphuli River. The water pressure has since reduced, leading to the closure of the gates, he said.
Abduzzaheh mentioned that five units of the Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Plant are currently generating up to 219 megawatts of electricity, with 32,000cfs of water being pumped through each unit.
According to sources at the hydroelectric plant, the maximum water holding capacity of the dam constructed over the Kapatai Lake is 109 MSL.
Earlier, the authorities had decided to release surging water in the Kaptai Lake by opening 16 spillway gates of the Karnaphuli Hydropower Station by six inches at 10PM on Saturday (August 24).
