CHATTOGRAM Aug 25: Communications to Port city Chattogram has been restored on Sunday after three days of suspension for an unprecedented flood in Feni, Cumilla and Chattogram.

Partial road communications have resumed since Sunday morning. But train service to other destinations outside Chattogram still remain suspended.

"Train service from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar, Hathazari and Dohazari have resumed on Sunday," said Saiful Islam, Divisional Manager of Bangladesh Railway, Chattogram.

He further said that the intercity train services remain suspended as large sections of the railway tracks still remain underwater.

Communications by train and road from the port city, Chattogram to other cities of the country have been suspended from Thursday afternoon following the deterioration of flood situation of the country.

The flood water from the railway tracks and the Chattogram-Dhaka Highway in Cumilla receded on Sunday morning.

Heavy vehicles like lorries, trucks, and buses that were stuck on the Highway in Cumilla are now moving slowly towards Dhaka. But the traffic movement on opposite lane from Dhaka to Chattogram remained halted due to flooding in Feni.

Several sections of the Highway, including Lalpol and Mahipal in Feni, are still under floodwater.
Meanwhile, the special train moved towards Chattogram from Cox's Bazar on Sunday evening and left for Cox's Bazar on Monday morning, Railway sources said.

The Bangladesh railway authorities said that the train service will remain suspended till the railway tracks in the flood affected areas are fully free from flood water.

Railway sources said, railway tracks had been inundated in different areas of Feni for which the authorities had been bound to suspend the train service till improvement of flood situation in those areas.

A total of 11 intercity trains run from Chattogram to various destinations including Dhaka, Sylhet, Jamalpur and Chandpur.

Meanwhile, the water level of Kaptai Lake reached over 108 MSL (Mean Sea Level) on Sunday morning due to heavy rain in the hilly areas as well as in the Indian parts of the Karnaphuli river.

The full storage capacity of the lake is 109 MSL. For this reason, the Kaptai Hydel Power plant authorities have been releasing water from the lake since 8:00am on Sunday.

They have releasing around 9000 cusec water from 16 spillways at six inches high.
