Eight people murdered in seven districts

Eight people including a woman have been murdered in separate incidents in seven districts - Munshiganj, Barishal, Kushtia, Pirojpur, Sirajganj, Cumilla and Kurigram, in three days. 

MUNSHIGANJ: A local leader of Juba League was shot to death by miscreants in Sirajdikhan Upazila of the district on Saturday night over a land dispute.

The incident took place in Malamat area of Debipura Village under Malkhanagar Union of the upazila at around 10:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Sheikh, 48, son of late Samad Sheikh, a resident of the area and a member of Malkhanagar Union Unit of Juba League. He was a fish trader by profession.

Local and the deceased's family sources said that two miscreants riding on a motorcycle shot Nasir Sheikh in front of Malamot Jame Masjid of Debipura Village at around 10:30 pm while he was returning home from a bazar, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Nasir dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Selim Sheikh, brother of the deceased, claimed that Babu and Noyan, two sons of one Nuru Sheikh, killed his brother in a planned attack over a land dispute.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sirajdikhan Police Station (PS) Mujahidul Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter and trying to detain those involved in the killing.

BARISHAL: A local leader of Awami League (AL) and his cousin brother were hacked to death by miscreants in Wazirpur Upazila of the district over a previous enmity, related to establishing supremacy in the area.

The incident took place in Satla Bridge area near Satla Bazar of the upazila at around 10 pm on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Idris Hawlader, a local leader of the AL, and his cousin brother Sagar Hawlader. Both of them were residents of the aforesaid area. 

Local sources said that Idris Ali along with his cousin brother was returning home from his business enterprise at around 10 pm riding on a motorcycle. 

When they arrived near Satla Bridge, a group of miscreants stopped their vehicle. The miscreants then hacked them indiscriminately, leaving the duo critically injured. 

Locals rescued the injured and took them to neighbouring Agailjhara Upazila Health Complex. They were, later, shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) following the deterioration of their condition, where Idris Hawladar succumbed to his injuries on the same night.

Later on, Sagar Hawlader died at around 9:30 am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at the SBMCH. 

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the SBMCH morgue for autopsies.

Wazirpur PS OC Md Zafor Ahmed confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are going on to identify and arrest those involved in the killings.

KUSHTIA: A union parishad (UP) member was hacked to death by his rivals in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday following a dispute over establishing supremacy in the area.

The incident took place in Asannagar Village under Gossami Durgapur Union of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mamun, 38, a resident of the aforesaid area. He was a member of Gossami Durgapur UP.

Quoting locals, Kushtia Islamic University PS OC Rakibul Hasan said that there had been a longstanding dispute between Wahab-Golap group and Mamun-Yahia group over establishing supremacy in the village. 

The two groups used to clash with each other from time to time. As a sequel to it, a fight broke out between the two groups on August 19 last.

Following this, some members of Mamun's rival group hacked him indiscriminately in the area on Saturday morning, leaving him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, legal action would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

PIROJPUR: A young man, who was injured in an attack carried out by his rivals over a dispute concerning unpaid debt in Mathbaria Upazila of the district, died on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam Rabbi, 20, son of late Chan Talukder and a resident of Gulishakhali Village in the upazila. 

He succumbed to his injuries at around 8 pm on Friday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka.

According to police and local sources, the incident began on Thursday evening when Ferdous Rahman Babu, uncle of the deceased, approached his neighbour and former Gulishakhali UP member Yusuf Hawlader to collect the money owed to him. This led to a heated argument between them. 

Following the argument, Yusuf along with his nephew Monir and their associates launched an attack at Gulishakhali Stand at around 8 pm that night. During the attack, Babu's son Bayzid Ahmed Joy, 22, a university student, and his nephew Rafiqul Islam Rabbi, 20, were severely injured.

The injured were then rescued and rushed to Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex, but as their condition deteriorated further, they were transferred to the SBMCH later that night. 

Rabbi, who was in critical condition, was then shifted to Green Life Hospital in Dhaka, where he passed away at around 8 pm on Friday night while undergoing treatment.

Mathbaria PS OC Rezaul Karim Rajib said that Ferdous Rahman Babu filed a case on Thursday night naming former UP member Yusuf as the main accused along with 16 other named and five unidentified individuals.

"With Rabbi's death, the case will now be reclassified as a murder case. On Friday night, police arrested two suspects Rabbi, 24, and Sabuj, 28, in connection with the murder," the OC added.

SIRAJGANJ: Miscreants killed a woman after robbing Tk 1.30 lakh from her house in Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Hedeja Begum, 60, wife of Shohrab Ali Mandal, a resident of Chandalboira Village in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that a group of miscreants entered the house of Hadeja Begum on Friday and killed her before robbing Tk 1.30 lakh.

Being informed by locals, police recovered the throat-slit body of the woman in the afternoon and sent it to a hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sirajganj Sadar PS OC Humayun Kabir confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter and trying to detain those involved in the killing.

CUMILLA: A man was killed reportedly by his aunt over a depute relating to planting tree in Daudkandi Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The incident took place in Dashpara Village under Sundalpur Union of the upazila in the evening.

The deceased was identified as Suman Bepari, 35, son of late Shahjalal Bepari, a resident of the village. He worked at Narayanganj Water Development Board office. 

Following the incident, police arrested his aunt Parul Akter along with her husband Ali Mia, their son Rabbi Ahmed and daughter Tania Akter. They were detained with the help of army and brought to Daudkandi PS.

According to locals, an altercation ensued between Suman and his aunt Parul which escalated on Thursday evening over planting of a tree. At one stage, Parul bit Suman in the testicles, causing him to lose consciousness. He was then rescued and rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Suman dead. 

Later on, his body was taken to the Daudkandi PS by the army, from where it was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy on Friday morning.

Filing of a murder case is underway in this connection.

RAJARHAT, KURIGRAM: A man was killed by his wife over a family dispute in Rajarhat Upazila of the district early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Rubel Mia, 25, son of late Solaiman Ali, a resident of Manabari Village under Bidyananda Union in the upazila.

Police sources said that locals spotted the body of Rubel Mia lying outside his room in the house at around 5:30 am entangled with an electric wire and informed the matter to police.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene. 

The deceased's elder sister China Begum lodged a murder case with Rajarhat PS in this connection.
 
Following this, police arrested the deceased's wife Lucky Khatun in the afternoon. 

Later on, the deceased's wife Lucky Khatun confessed of killing her husband after electrocuting him at one stage of an altercation that took place between them over family issues at early hours of Thursday.  

However, the arrested woman was sent to jail following a court order.

Rajarhat PS OC Mostafizur Rahman, PPM, confirmed the   incident.
