FENI, Aug 27: The week-long flood, triggered by non-stop rain and upstream water from India, has, so far, affected about 11.50 people in the district.

The flooding has still been carrying out devastation in the district.

Arm, Navy, Air Force, RAB, BGB, different voluntary organisations, students and public rescued 1.5 lakh water-trapped people.

Besides, as part of facing the flood, many took shelter in safer places at their own initiative.

This information was confirmed by Feni Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shahina Aktar on Monday (Aug 26) night.

She said, so far, at the government and private level, 62,000 dry food packets have been distributed in the district among flood victims.

Another 48,000 packets of food items were air-dropped by army, navy and RAB.

Besides, volunteers are reaching food items to people in affected areas, the DC added. At present, the flood water is receding in the district; water recession was reported significantly in Porshuram, Fulgazi and Chhagalnaiya upazilas.

According to sources at Water Development Board-Feni confirmed improving of the flood situation, with water recession from the town.

Local victims said, the water was continuing to deteriorate on the previous day, but it started to recede as it was not raining for the whole day on Monday.

Now, significant activities by volunteers are noticeable.

The DC encouraged the on-going rescue and dry food distribution by voluntary organisations along with the governmental initiative.

According to Relief and Rehabilitation Branch sources, till Monday, cash Tk 40 lakh and 2,000 tonne rice were allocated. Hotchpotch and dry food were distributed to shelter centres.

In some places of the district, mobile networks are active; but two-thirds of electricity connection are still disrupted.

With the water recession, damage scars are becoming visible; water-borne diseases are affecting people; and at present, drinking water and medicine crises are created. If emergency measures are not taken at this moment, serious humanitarian crisis is likely.

In the first phase, a four to five day rain-induced flooding, since July 2, affected Fulgazi, Porshuram and Chhagalnaiya upazilas; then the embankment of the Muhuri-Kahua-Silonia river embankment broke at 20 points.

In a month gap, the second time flooding in the first week of August broke 10 more points of the dam, deluging these upazilas again.

On August 20, the third-phase flooding affected all upazilas of the district.
