Hill slope dwellers demand permanent living place at Kaptai Upazila

KAPTAI, RANGAMATI, Aug 28: "We don't want to go to shelter centres. We want to see Kaptai as Mouja. We want permanent living address," said people of 600 families living with risk at hill slopes in Kaptai Upazila of the district.

These hilly families are living in different places of hill slopes at Ward No. 5 of Kaptai No. 4 Union in the upazila.

"We don't want to go to the shelter centres every year," they added. 

They further said, "Earlier we got false promises from MP candidates, upazila and union chairman candidates in this regard."
  
"We have been living in hill slopes facing storm and wind for a long time. We no longer want such living status," they said again. 

Taking life risk, these families are continuing their living in Natun Bazar, Dhakaiya Colony, Loggate, Graveyard and along Karnaphuli River banks. 

In hill slopes, Natun Bazar area some dwellers were seen hanging triples to protect their living installations. 

Every year in the rainy season, local administration asks these dwellers for going to shelter centres from hill slopes.

Dwellers living in risky slopes including Hazera, Amena, Zakir and Hossain Ali said, "MP, upazila and union chairmen are elected by our votes. 

We are given false promise about Mouja and permanent address. We don't want to go to shelter centres if even we die in hill slopes," they added.

Member of Ward No. 5 of Kaptai No. 4 Union Iman Ali said, over 600 families are living in death risk in hill slopes.

Every rainy season, they are asked by the local administration for going to shelter centres; then few of them go and others deny.

He also demanded making Kaptai Mouja or permanent living area.
