Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus will use the Prime Minister's office at Tejgaon in the capital.

The office was renovated following 15 day repair works and prepared it for Dr Yunus.

Officials of Public Works Department said the renovation works cost initially Tk 50 crore.

Nameplates inside and outside the office have been changed, and the security measures heightened.

Dr Yunus is scheduled to hold his first meeting with advisers on Thursday at the office.

Officials of Public Works Department said former Prime Minister's Tejgaon office, Ganabhaban, Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and other important sites were damaged by angry people on August 5 in the wake of mass uprising.

They said nearly Tk 50 crore was spent on repairing the damage at this office initially. The renovation work was supervised by Chief Engineer Mohammad Shamim Akhter and Director of the Chief Adviser's Office Moniruzzaman, with strict security measures in place during the renovation.

The works included electrical, civil, computer, security, and painting tasks. The workspaces for all relevant officials of the Chief Adviser were also completed.

They noted that the damage to the Prime Minister's office including the Red Zone and offices of Secretary, Director, and various intelligence agencies are worth at least Tk 100 crore.

While some furniture was repaired and reused, much had to be discarded. Since the next head of government use this office, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus recommended renovation of the office, said officials.

They added that this is because preparing another building for the interim government would require substantial expenses. Dr Yunus believes that if a new building for the Chief Adviser's office is constructed, the subsequent government might not use it, leading to waste. Therefore, he has instructed that the Prime Minister's office be made functional again.

Since 1991, the old National Parliament House in Tejgaon has been used as the Prime Minister's office.

The outgoing Prime Minister typically conducted daily official duties here, and most Cabinet meetings were held in this office.

However, there is also a government office for the Prime Minister at the Bangladesh Secretariat, where the outgoing Prime Minister occasionally worked and held Cabinet meetings.  Before 1991, the building served as the President's Secretariat.
