Hasina, 3 ex-ministers sued over murder in Brahmanbaria

A case has been filed against 54 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on charge of killing a youth in Brahmanbaria in 2021over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh.

Babul Mia, brother of the victim Jahirul Islam, 35, a resident of Suhilpur village in Sadar upazila of the district, filed the case against 54 named and 200 unidentified people with Brahmanbaria Sadar police station early Thursday said Officer In-Charge of the police station Mozaffar Hossain.

Other accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former law minister Anisul Huq and former housing and public works minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury.

According to the case statement, on 26 March, 2021, leaders and activists of Awami League had attacked the activists of Hefazat-e-Islam during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's  visit to Bangladesh.

On that afternoon, AL men and law enforcers shot at the protesters in front of BISIC Industrial Zone at Nandanpur area in the Sadar upazila, leaving Jahirul severely injured. Later, he succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, on March 26, 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dhaka to attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence. In protest of his visit, Hefazat leaders and activists organised a procession. 

At least five people were killed and several others were injured when demonstrators clashed with police and AL men in Brahmanbaria.
