Bangladesh Bank (BB) has earned a record income of around Tk 40.000 crore in 2023-24 and out of it the bank's net profit excluding operating cost was Tk 15,100 crore as against Tk 15,000 crore in the previous fiscal.
On Wednesday (August 28) the board of directors meeting of the central bank approved the financial statements of the last financial year. The meeting was chaired by Governor Dr. Ahsan H Mansoor.
Bangladesh Bank has given huge short term loans to various banks against repo, special repo in last financial year. In all, the amount of such borrowing was Tk 32,21,000 crore; which is more than the total loan disbursed in the previous seven years.
Interest rates were also higher than at any time in recent times. Besides, it has earned a lot of money by selling foreign currency and lending to the government.
During the time of former governor Abdur Rauf Talukder, the central bank overprinted money in the last three months of the fiscal year and gave loan of about Tk 41,000 crore.
