Nine people murdered in eight districts

Nine people have been murdered in separate incidents in seven districts - Kurigram, Narayanganj, Chattogram, Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Rajshahi, Cox's Bazar and Gazipur in recent times.

NAGESHWARI, KURIGRAM: A man was killed in an attack carried out by his rivals in Nageshwari Upazila of the district on Thursday over a land dispute.

The incident occurred in Mohsiner Char area under Ballaverkhas Union of the upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Barkat Ullah, 45, son of Abu Bakar, a resident of Parervita Village under Ballaverkhas Union. 
Police and local sources said Barkat Ullah had a longstanding dispute with his cousin brother Matiur Rahman, 38, son of Abul Kashem of Krishnapur Kaladanga Village, over the ownership of a piece of land. At around 7 am on Thursday, Matiur along with his followers attacked on Barkat Ullah while Barkat went to work on that disputed cropland, and beat up him indiscriminately, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued injured Barkat Ullah and admitted him to Kurigram Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor shifted him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital following the deterioration of his condition.

Later on, Barkat Ullah succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital in the evening while undergoing treatment.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

The deceased's elder brother Boyez Uddin, being the plaintiff, lodged a murder case with Kochakata Police Station (PS) accusing 29 people including Matiur on Friday morning.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kochakata PS Biswadev Roy confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers have arrested Matiur and are trying to arrest the rest of the accused.

NARAYANGANJ: A young man was killed during a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Sonargaon Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The incident took place in Mohzompur West Kazipara area under Jampur Union of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Md Shawn, 24, son of Ali Azgar alias Banna, a resident of the area.

It was known that there had been a longstanding dispute between BNP leader Israfil and Awami League (AL) leader Motaleb over land. On Thursday afternoon, both groups were engaged in an altercation. Following this, they attacked each other with locally-made weapons, which left nine people injured from both groups.

The injured were then rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex, but Shawn died on the way to the DMCH. 

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Taltala Police Outpost In-Charge Inspector Md Saiful Islam confirmed the incident, adding that legal procedures are under process in this regard.

HATHAZARI, CHATTOGRAM: Miscreants shot two local activists of the AL to death at Kuiyash Burischar in Hathazari Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The incident occurred at night in front of Nahar Garden in the Kuiyash Burischar Sheikh Mohammad City Corporation College area.

The deceased were identified as Md Anis, 38, of Pashchim Kuiyash area, and Masud Kaiser, 32, of Paschim Kuiyash Billa Bari area under Shikarpur Union in Hathazari.

They were the followers of AL leader Yunus Gani Chowdhury, former chairman of Hathazari Upazila Parishad, said Madunaghat Police Outpost In-Charge Mohiuddin Sumon.

According to police, Anis and Kaiser were walking along the Oxygen-Kuiyash road. When they reached Nahar Community Centre area, two assailants on motorcycles randomly fired shots at them. Both of them fell on the ground after being shot. The assailants quickly fled the scene.
 
Chattogram Acting Superintendent of Police (SP) Wasim Firoz said that the two were seriously injured in the shooting on the Oxygen-Kuiyash road. Anis died on the spot, and Kaiser was declared dead by the on-duty doctors after being taken to a local hospital. 

Primary information suggested that the incident occurred due to previous enmity, the SP added.

DHOBAURA, MYMENSINGH: An ill-fated man was strangled to death reportedly by his wife in Dhobaura Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Tara Dighirpar area of Balrampur Village under the upazila in the morning.

Dhobaura PS OC Chan Mia confirmed the incident, adding that they have arrested the accused Tara Begum in this connection.

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Nur Islam, a resident of the aforesaid village.

According to police and local sources, Shahidul got married for the second time with the accused Tara Begum in Dhaka. Since their marriage, Tara used to visit Shahidul often at his village home where he used to live along with his first wife and children. On Wednesday morning, the accused came to the village and locked into an argument with her husband. At one stage of the quarrel, she strangled Shahidul to death and fled the scene.

Later on, police recovered the body of the deceased.

OC Chan Mia further said that being informed about the incident, they sent a message to Mymensingh Kotwali PS who arrested the accused while she was trying to flee.

However, legal action would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR: A young man was beaten to death by a mob in Kulaura Upazila of the district early Wednesday.
The incident took place in Balishiri Village under Kulaura Sadar Union of the upazila at around 2 am.
The deceased was identified as Jayed Khan, 28, a resident of the same village.

According to police sources, local people apprehended Jayed while he was trying to steal an electric fan from a school in Balishiri Village at around 2 am, and beat up him mercilessly. 

Later on, police rescued him in critical condition and took him to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared the youth dead.

Kulaura PS OC Binay Bhusan Roy confirmed the incident, adding that the body of the deceased was recovered and sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Legal actions will be taken if the deceased's family members file any complaint in this regard, the OC added.

RAJSHAHI: A suspected thief was beaten to death reportedly by a mob in Tanore Upazila of the district on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Sohan Ali, 18, son of Samsuddin and a resident of Elamdihi area in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Tanore PS OC Abdur Rahim said that some valuables were stolen from some shops at Ilamdihi Bazar in the upazila at around 11 pm. After that, people stand vigil at night and caught Sohan red-handed suspecting as one of the thieves. The angry crowd then beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.

Later on, he was rescued and taken to Tanore Upazila Health Complex, where Sohan succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, said the police official.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, legal actions will be taken in this regard, the OC added.

PEKUA, COX'S BAZAR: A local leader of Sramik Dal was killed by his rivals in a factional clash over establishing supremacy in Pekua Upazila of the district on Monday night.

The incident took place in front of Switch Gate near Pekua Bazar in the upazila town at around 10:30 pm. 

Two others were also critically injured in the incident. 

The deceased was identified as Sahidul Islam alias Shawkat, 38, son of late Shofiul Alam, a resident of Bholaighona area under Pekua Sadar Union in the upazila. He was the former general secretary of Pekua Sadar Union West Zone Sramik Dal.

The injured persons are: Md Shaker, 28, younger brother of Sahidul Islam, and his cousin Md Tarek, 24. They are currently receiving treatment at Pekua Upazila Health Complex.

Local sources said that there had been a dispute after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in between Sahidul Islam and Sazzadul Islam, former president of Pekua Sadar Union West Zone Sramik Dal, over establishing supremacy in the Sramik union line of auto-rickshaw and CNG in the upazila.   

As a sequel to it, Sahidul Islam assaulted a cousin brother of Sazzadul Islam at around 8 pm on Monday. Later on, at around 10:30 pm, Sazzadul along with 10 to 12 others attacked on Sahidul with machetes, leaving him critically injured. Shaker and Tarek were also injured at that time while they were trying to protect Sahidul.

Locals then rescued the three injured and took them to Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred Sahidul to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) following the deterioration of his condition, 
Later on, Sahidul succumbed to his injuries on the way to the CMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the body. 

Pekua PS OC Md Ilias said confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are going on to arrest those involved in the killing and determine the motive behind the attack.

GAZIPUR:  An accused in a murder case was lynched by mob in Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Md Rimon Mia, 28, son of Mosleh Uddin Master, a resident of Vadogati Village under Ward No. 6 in Kaliganj Municipality. He was the main accused in the murder case of Foysal, son of a former lawmaker Mokhlesur Rahman.

It was known that some people attacked on Rimon in Khinjoina Village on Saturday afternoon. He managed to escape and took shelter in another village, named Kumartek, where he was again assaulted by a group of people, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued and taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Rimon Mia dead.
Being informed, police have recovered the body from the hospital.

Kaliganj PS OC Mahatab Uddin confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
