A leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami died while undergoing treatment in a hospital after being attacked by muggers with sticks at Sapahar upazila in Naogaon district.
He succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 2:40 PM on Saturday.
Earlier, he was attacked by the muggers at around 10:00 PM near Soyadpur bridge on the Sapahar-Joboybeel road in the upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abdullah-Hill-Kafi, son of Mowlana Abdur Rahim, a resident of Kowavasa village in the upazila. He was the secretary of the Sapahar upazila unit of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Locals said that some muggers stopped Abdullah-Hill-Kafi and his associate, Aahmadullah, when they were returning to Sapahar from Asorbandarbazar. The muggers then took them to a mango garden, looted their belongings, including mobile phones and money, and attempted to steal their motorcycle. They struck Abdullah-Hill-Kafi on the head with sticks.
Although Aahmadullah was protected by a helmet and remained unharmed, Abdullah-Hill-Kafi was critically injured.
Upon hearing their screams, locals rescued them and rushed Abdullah-Hill-Kafi to Sapahar Upazila Health Complex. He was later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for further treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon.
A murder case has been filed at Sapahar Police Station, said Polash Debnath, officer-in-charge of the station.
