PABNA, Aug 31: Even though all the 109 gates of Farakka Dam in India were opened, the water of the Padma River has not risen at Hardinge Bridge Point in Ishwardi Upazila of the district till August 31.

The water has also not increased at the Mathura Point of the Jamuna River in Bera Upazila; at present, the water is passing far below the danger mark over the last few days; and so far, the water at these two major points remained stable, according to official sources.

Reader of Pakshi Hardinge Bridge Point of Water Development Board (WDB) Harifun Naeem Ibn Salam said, the  Padma water was stable on August 26-27 at the Hardinge Bridge Point; height of the water was measured at 11.98 metres for two days; on August 25, the water level at that point was 11.97 metres; and it was 7.70 centimetre (CM) at the Mathura Point at Bhar.

Abdullah Baki, fisherman of the Hardinge Bridge area at Pakshi said, "I heard that 109 gates of Farakka have been opened. I was worried because of opening all the gates. We spent a night of terror.

But when we came down the Hardinge Bridge with a fishing boat in the river in the morning, it is not clear that the water has risen."

Arjina Begum, a resident of Saraghat area of Ishwardi, said, "India opened all the gates. So I spent a sleepless night because many houses sank before. Many people moved to other places due to the erosion by the river. But before the flood occurs, measures are taken for us."

Ilyas Hossain, assistant engineer of WDB-Pabna, said, "Although India has opened 109 gates of Farakka Dam, Padma's water has not yet increased at the Hardinge Bridge Point; the water depth at this point is 10.80 metres. The water of Padma is flowing far below the danger mark."

Pabna  WDB Assistant Director Mosharf Hossain said, after opening all the gates of Farakka Dam, there is no danger of flooding in Pabna region; when the water of Jamuna decreases, the water of Padma increases.

At present, the water of Jamuna is decreasing rapidly. "So we believe, there is no danger of flooding," he added.

The depth at Hardinge Bridge Point of the Padma River was 13.80 metres on Monday and 11.98 metres on Tuesday.

According to him, water is flowing far below the danger zone; if the water crosses the 13.80 metres watermark and rises to 15 or 16 metres, there may be a risk to the dam.
Now, there is no danger of dam breaking in Pabna District. But low-lying areas are flooded every year.
