Ready made garments (RMG) workers have blocked roads in Ashulia and Savar demanding higher tiffin allowances, attendance bonuses, a 10% annual increment, and earned leave (EL) for all staff, which forced several factories to close on Sunday.
However, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) officials confirmed that the factories had already cleared workers' salaries, with no pending wages.
The protests, ongoing for a week, are driven by demands for higher tiffin allowances, attendance bonuses, a 10% annual increment, and earned leave for all staff. BGMEA confirmed that salaries had been paid, but unrest continues.
Industry sources, including BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem, claim that external agitators are fueling the disruptions, particularly targeting large factories. Some factories have given workers the day off due to the protests, while others remain operational under tight security, with the army patrolling the area.
BGMEA is in talks with trade union leaders, urging them to discourage the protests, citing the recent wage structure adjustments and the current economic situation.
