A joint operation, combining armed forces and internal security personnel, will begin from Wednesday (September 4) to recover weapons stolen from police stations and units during the mass attacks following the fall of Sheikh Hasina government.

Public Relations Officer Faisal Ahmed of the Ministry of Home Affairs informed this through a press release on Sunday.

The police headquarters has announced that all arms and ammunition looted from police stations during the recent violence must be returned by Tuesday (September 3).

It also warned that legal action will be taken if the stolen weapons are not returned by this period.
Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs suspended firearm licenses issued to all civilians over during the 15-and-a-half years of the Awami League government, with a deadline set for September 3 for the submission of these weapons to their respective police stations.

A senior officer of the police said the armed forces are in the field to assist the civil administration, so they will be part of the joint drive.

As of August 31, police recovered 3,872 firearms, around 2.86 lakh bullets, 2,221 tear gas canisters and 2,139 sound grenades.

A large number of looted arms and ammunition still remained unrecovered, said sources.
