Illegal Firearms Recovery

Joint raid to begin on Sept 4: Home Adviser

A joint raid will begin on Wednesday to recover unauthorised firearms, Home Adviser Lt Gen  (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday. 

The raid will kick off a  day after the Sept 3 deadline for returning the firearms looted from police stations.
Earlier, the interim government suspended the licenses of firearms issued to civilians in last 15 years.

A notification, signed by Md Zahirul Haque, senior assistant secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, said that the firearms licenses issued to civilians from  January 6, 2009 to August 5, 2024 have been suspended
There were attacks on police stations after Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5.

After policemen deserted police stations, thousands of firearms and ammunition were looted from police stations and outposts.
 
During her meeting with Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on last Sunday, French Ambassador to Bangladesh Marie Masdupuy expressed concern over looted  weapons.

On the same day, the interim government suspended all firearms licences issued to civilians during 15 years and a half of the fallen Awami League government.

Police Headquarters requested all to return the weapons and ammunition looted from police stations and outposts.
If looted firearms are not returned by September 3, anyone having these weapons would face action, said the notification.
