BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday, BNP's main task is  implementing ideology of the party's founder Ziaur Rahman and restore democracy.

On Sunday, BNP celebrated its 46th founding anniversary in limited scale by placing wreaths at Zia's grave and holding  doa and milad mahfil in front of its office at Naya Paltan.

After placing wreaths at Zia's grave, he told reporters, BNP leaders and activists have taken the vow to build a new Bangladesh.

Fakhrul said, "Currently, the main task of the BNP is to implement the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and materialise his dreams. Our goal now  is to uphold democracy that restored  by our leader, Begum Khaleda Zia."

He said BNP is committed to restore  democracy in Bangladesh on a firm footing, restore free-market economy and build a prosperous nation, braving all challenges and obstacles.

"Today we took the pledge build the new Bangladesh that our party's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, is working tirelessly to make a reality," said Fakhrul.

Earlier, several thousand party leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies, led by Fakhrul, laid wreaths at Zia's grave and offered fateha on BNP's 46th founding anniversary.

They also offered special prayers for etrnal peace of Zia and good health of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Fakhrul said Ziaur Rahman freed Bangladesh from the one-party rule and introduced multi-party democracy.

"Ziaur Rahman gave new direction to the nation with his 19-point programme and he presented a new dream to the nation. His foresight and vision helped shape Bangladesh into what it is today. He laid the foundation for transforming Bangladesh into a modern nation through multi-party democracy and a free market economy," Fakhrul said.

He said Ziaur Rahman founded BNP to lead the nation on the path of democracy and economic development.

Fakhrul also said their party Chairperson, Khaleda Zia, paved a new path for democracy by defeating the then-dictatorship in 1990, along with students and the general public.

He said that the BNP struggled for 15 years to achieve free the nation from autocratic rule of Sheikh Hasina. "Many BNP leaders and activists were subjected to enforced disappearances, over 2,000 were killed, and false cases were filed against our 6 million leaders and activists, during the movement for restoration of democracy."

He thanked the students and the people for making the movement successful and for defeating the autocratic regime.

"By Allah's grace, we are now able to celebrate this day in a free atmosphere. We believe that BNP has always provided the right leadership, will continue to engage in the right politics in the future, and will move ahead with the people."

Speaking at a doa and milad mahfil in front of the Naya Paltan BNP party office, he said that there is a conspiracy to discredit BNP by falsely linking with negative activities.

"We want to make it clear that we have been fighting for democracy for the past 16 years, and our struggle will of course continue until democracy is fully restored," he said.

He said the fascist Awami League government made evil attempts to weaken  BNP using repression and implicating the party leaders and activists in false cases.

"The plots against us continue. There are ongoing efforts to tarnish the BNP's reputation by associating the party with various negative activities,"

He said many plots were hatched in the past to eliminate Zia's party, but all have failed because the BNP is like a river with powerful currents, remains resilient and enduring.
