Protesting DMCH doctors to resume services partially from today

Police arrest youth from Gaibandha

Police on Monday arrested a youth from the Bus Stand area in Gaibandha town for his alleged connection with the assault on Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) doctors and vandalising the hospital on August 31.

Following the development, protesting doctors withdraw their preannounced full-scale work abstention and declared to resume outdoor and indoor services on a limited scale from Tuesday.

The arrested was identified as Sanjay Pal Joy, 25, son of Ranjit Das, a resident of Masterpara of the district town. 

Masud Rana, Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, told reporters that a team of police conducted a raid in Bus Stand area and arrested Sanjay.

Superintendent of Police of Gaibandha Mosharraf Hossain said, "We arrested Sanjay Pal in connection with the attack incident. Legal steps would be taken against him. A case was also filed in this connection."

On Saturday evening, three neurosurgery doctors were reportedly came under attack following death of a Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) student at DMCH.

The attack created fear among doctors and they along with nurses and staffs of the hospital abstained from duties on Sunday for over      
12 hours till 8:30pm.

After assurance from Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum of taking stern action against the perpetrators, they resumed only emergency services at night on Sunday.

As police arrested one from Gaibandha in connection with the attack, doctors on Monday decided to resume outdoor and indoor services on a limited scale from Tuesday.

The outdoor services will run from 10:00am to 1:00pm and indoor services will be available on a limited scale, said Abdul Ahad, resident surgeon of DMCH Neurosurgery Department at a press conference held in front of the hospital's administrative building.

He said the emergency department will remain open as before.

The doctors will stage a sit-in programme from 8:00am to 10:00am today (Tuesday) to realise their two-point demand.

The demands included arrest and punishment of the criminals who attacked on doctors and introduction of "health police" under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), to ensure security of doctors at all hospitals across the country.

On Sunday, a case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station against a teacher and three students from the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) and 40 to 50 unidentified people over the attack and vandalism.
